Maintenance of Way (M.O.W.)

Track work that keeps your Supply Chain Moving

When your track needs attention, the impact can reach beyond the railway, affecting production, deliveries, inventory, and customer commitments.

Prairie Gateway Rail provides preventative and corrective track maintenance to help businesses across Manitoba and the Prairies keep their rail infrastructure ready for service.

From individual repairs to ongoing maintenance programs, we bring practical railway experience and an understanding of how your track supports your operation.

What Is Maintenance of Way?

Maintenance of Way, or M.O.W. for short, is the railway term for the hands-on work that keeps track and its supporting infrastructure in serviceable condition. It includes replacing worn components, restoring track support and alignment, maintaining switches, and repairing crossings.

For your business, that means looking after the infrastructure that connects your facility to the rail network and addressing wear before it leads to larger repairs or interruptions.

Track & Switch Maintenance

PGR provides a range of maintenance and repair services, including:

  • Tie replacement: Replacing deteriorated ties to help support the rails and hold them in position.

  • Rail replacement and repairs: Addressing worn or damaged rail.

  • Switch maintenance and repairs: Keeping the components that direct railcars between tracks in working condition.

  • Ballast placement and regulating: Adding and shaping the crushed stone that supports the track.

  • Tamping, surfacing, and alignment: Packing ballast beneath the ties and correcting track level and position.

  • Crossing repairs and rehabilitation: Restoring track and crossing surfaces where roads and railway tracks meet.

  • General track rehabilitation: Addressing multiple worn or deteriorated components to improve the condition of an existing track.

  • Planned and emergency repairs: Supporting scheduled maintenance needs and responding when unexpected problems arise.

Built Around Your Operation

Effective maintenance starts with understanding your business. We take the time to learn how you use your track, where problems are affecting service, and what access and scheduling constraints need to be considered.

Whether you manage a single industrial siding or a larger rail-served facility, PGR works alongside your team to establish priorities and coordinate the work around your operational requirements.

Support Beyond the Repair

Some customers need a specific repair. Others need ongoing support to manage aging infrastructure and plan future work. PGR helps connect immediate maintenance needs with longer-term upkeep and capital planning, giving you access to railway expertise without having to maintain that capability internally.
