Industrial Switching

The right railcar. In the right place. When your operation needs it.

Rail service doesn’t end when cars arrive at your facility. They need to be moved, positioned for loading or unloading, and pulled when ready for departure. Those movements must be coordinated with your people, production schedules, and available track space.

Prairie Gateway Rail provides qualified railway personnel and industrial switching support to help facilities across Manitoba and the Prairies manage the movement of railcars within their operations.

What Is Industrial Switching?

Industrial switching is the movement and placement of railcars within a facility or industrial yard. It connects the railway’s delivery and pickup service with the work happening at your loading and unloading points. You may hear the terms spotting and pulling. Spotting means placing a railcar at the location where it is needed. Pulling means removing it from that location once it is ready for its next move.

Switching Services

PGR provides operational support tailored to your facility, including:

  • Industrial railcar switching: Moving railcars between tracks and operating areas within your facility.

  • Railcar spotting and pulling: Positioning cars for loading or unloading and removing them when the work is complete.

  • Qualified Engineers and Conductors: Providing experienced railway personnel to support switching operations.

  • Railcar movement coordination: Organizing switching activities around car availability, loading requirements, and outbound readiness.

  • Temporary and ongoing support: Helping meet short-term operating needs or providing continuing switching services.

Coordinated With Your Production.

A switching plan needs to reflect how your facility works. Track layout, loading capacity, staffing, and production schedules all influence where railcars need to be and when they need to move.

PGR works alongside your team to understand those requirements and coordinate switching activities with a focus on safety, clear communication, and efficient use of your rail infrastructure.
